Are You Being Called?
Tuesday, February 22, 2005
This topic that I've found in Woman's Day magazine (Feb'05 edition) became interesting for me to talk about, especially for my journal's update."Callings are the intuitions, passions and voices that tell us how to find our true north," says Gregg Levoy, author of Callings: Finding and Following an Authentic Life. The call could come in any form: going back to school, volunteering, having a child or simply being creative, religious service, etc.The article also put the story about four women who each of them has different kind of call. They share how they realized what the higher purpose for their present lives. The first woman has a call to service, specifically to help the world's orphaned children (African children for example). The second woman who was an anchorwoman in NC and had been nominated for an Emmy Award has a call on behalf of adoption. She was being called to leave her profession and become an advocate for adoption. The third woman who was upwardly mobile professionals has a call to simplify her life and help others learn to do the same. The last woman (the author of this article) who had been a successful freelance writer turns to be ordained as a deacon in a her community church.
"Are you being called?" Now I can answer the question by my own after reading the four women's story. I think my call has been inspired by the third woman's thought which is a call to simplicity. Just like what she said about simplicity, I have similar idea that "simple living can be abundant living. It's not just about saving money, it's about becoming who feel called to be".
I remember some cousins used to call me Ms. Discount because I love to buy anything on discount or on sale. Yeah.. the reason, in my opinion, is because it's not worth it to get something you don't need it right away like medicine. In similar way my cousins did, my Mom-in-law the other day called me Ms. Economist because I always put something in cost calculation before deciding to spend out the money. Oh well, I can't help being an economist person.
Before getting married, I had dreams to become a top management (Director) in my ex company even I would get married someday. Then my dreams have been suddenly drowned out with no track during my present life. Yeap, now I am only a homemaker which is turned out totally different from working as a professional for several years. I may not be able to explain fully the process of my metamorphosis to you all. However, it feels all right to me. "What we have lost in income, we have gained in inner peace and feeling of control over our lives. Sure, we could have a bigger home, newer cars and more money in the bank if we'd stayed at our jobs, but those things would come at a price we're not willing to pay." (source: Nancy Twigg) .

I know simplicity reaches all aspects of my life. Always looking for ways and comparing the prices are something I like to do to cut my family's expense. Well, are you ready to recognize and respond to your call now?? Just answer for yourself, ok!
