One Surprising Sunday
Sunday, October 30, 2005
When we were ready to start a short choir practice 15 minutes before Sunday third mass began, Diane showed up with a bad news. She said she was not going to play music for us because she was feeling not well due to her numb fingers that she found it happened near the end of second mass. I can't imagine if it has happened in the middle of the mass. We all felt sorry about her and surely we all do hoping her to get better soon. I understand how busy she is to handle all the choirs including kids, teenagers, and adults, and she has to play music (organ & piano) together with choirs 5 times a week in according to mass schedule. She plays many roles in leading the church music where her positions are a director of music, an instructor, a musician, and a member choir singer or a cantor sometimes.Surprised by her accident, we were feeling uncertain to know that Diane asked Marcia, one of choir members, to replace her position in playing a music.
Marcia looked very nervous, although she is capable playing a piano very well. The problems we found are she had never played a music in a church, we only had 10 minutes to practice the songs first time with her music, and she is not familiar with the order of mass when she starts the music and when she has to end it up. A good thing is each of us gave her an encouraging spirit not to worry too much and everything would be fine. The show must go on that we had been thinking about when we stepped out of the music room entering the church's hall.
During the singing, Patty who stood next to me was busy giving a sign to Marcia when she had to start the music, when it had to end and when she discontinued the music after 2 versions out of 5 versions in the middle of one song we used to sing. Together with Patty, Monica the cantor was a big help, too. She went back and forth to Marcia whispering something about the upcoming songs that Marcia had to prepare the notes to playing from the music book. Funny, interesting, and heart beating all mixed up together how we felt doing this today's choir. Although we got a little trouble that the music sometimes left behind the songs or the music was too late to begin, I think over all we did it pretty well in particular such a difficult-unexpected-condition we have been through today. At the end, we all congratulated to Marcia the musician and Monica the cantor that they had done a great job in collaborating the music together with the songs. One lesson from today: teamwork spirit is the best tool to fight the worries.
