Having a Personality

Tuesday, March 01, 2005

The other day I watched the show "Jennifer Lopez: Beyond The Runway" produced by MTV together with Jennifer Lopez. The show is about how the singer handled her project in doing the fashion show to introduce her fashion-brand under JLo. Well, I bring this subject up to my journal not because I am one of her fans, neither I like her songs or movies. Sure, I won't deny at all that she is a pretty-charming woman.

In my opinion, the singer who looks a little bit nasty in some photo poses and in her video clips is the person who has her own personality. I would say her project was done successfully. She has a sense of opportunity, she knows how to formulate the problems, she is able to communicate the vision to the team and give them supports. In dealing with the problems, she devotes some time and attention to helping it along, encouraging movements, and making sure that things are going the right way.

If you look the way she handled the project, it's pretty clear she has good leadership. How could I say that? As you might know, leader deals with two things which are the job and the group. You can always tell when a leader succeeds, definitely because the job gets done and the group holds together.

Then you might ask "how she has a good leadership while she never went to study after high school?" Well, the answer is easy. Leadership is a process of getting things done through people. This is one of the keys to leadership. Leadership is not a science. Also, there are no rules for leadership. However there are certain skills that every good leader seems to have. The funny thing about leadership is that a good leader doesn't necessarily know how he/she does it. He/she just does what comes naturally and the others follow him/her. Although he/she may not know it, he/she has mastered the skills of leadership. Leadership also means responsibility. It means that the leader must take the responsibility of getting the job done.

Your next question could be like this,"Is she able to manage any other project than the fashion show?" Keep in mind that leadership never takes place in a vacuum; it always takes place in a context. Someone viewed as a good leader in one project may have no impact in another project.

Talking about leadership, it reminds me the program I took for a year in my ex work which is named Advanced Management Development Program. I was fortunate to get educated how to become a good leader and what kind of leadership I do have.
